What is your favorite childhood book?

My favorite childhood books are written and illustrated by Eric Carle. Growing up, I always found myself getting lost in his detailed, textural, and colorful illustrations. If I had to pick just one, I would say the Hungry Caterpillar is my favorite.

What is your secret talent?

My secret talent is making (and eating!) charcuterie boards.

Who was your favorite teacher in Elementary School and Why?

My favorite elementary school teacher was my 4th Grade teacher Mr. Beernink. He fostered a classroom environment that made us feel safe to express ourselves and to speak freely without judgement. Reflecting on my time in his classroom has made me prioritize what I want my students to take away from my classroom. Years from now, I want my students to look back on their time in elementary school with positive memories of critical thinking, self expression, and fun!

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching would have to be the meaningful relationships I make with my students, their families, and the community I teach in. My goal every year is to make my classroom feel like a second home to my students by building my classroom culture around teamwork and growth mindset. Something else that I love about teaching is that it has made me a lifelong learner- learning new things about my students, their interests, experiences, and new ways of thinking.

What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

My favorite subject to teach is math. I love math because there is not one way of solving and explaining your thought process. I enjoy watching my students use math as a creative outlet by connecting with strategies learned in class and choosing the one that expresses their thoughts best. It’s fun to see all of the different ways each student can find an answer to the same problem!
