What is your favorite childhood book?

I loved “The Whale Song,” by Dyan Sheldon. I was fascinated by the ocean and the illustrations in the book were so lovely. I would also have to give an honorable mention to “Scary Stories We Tell in the Dark.” This series was so frightening and mysterious. My best friend and I bonded over reading these books on the playground in 3rd grade and we have been best friends ever since!

What is your secret talent?

I am really good at music trivia. When I was little, my mom and dad used to quiz me on song titles and artists on the radio. My husband is always amazed at how many songs I can sing all the lyrics to. I often play songs for my students and they tell me I am old!

Who was your favorite teacher in Elementary School and Why?

My 5th grade teacher, Mr. Roach. He was an old Marine Corp. vet and and so tough on the exterior, but a huge softy. He pushed his students to be the best they could be in all aspects of life. When I decided to start a career in teaching, his example was what guided me.

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

I love to help kids find and understand their own strengths and work through challenges. It is so rewarding to guide a child that does not like or think they are any good at something into loving it and having success by the end of the year.

What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

I love teaching reading comprehension because of the many interpretations that can be made from the same text. It really amazes me the different ways kids can interpret and understand ideas. I get so excited when a student can bring to light something in a text that I had not even thought about! This really helps me get to know students and understand their individual experiences.

Why are you excited continue in the Willow family?

This will be my second year at Willow and I am thrilled to remain a part of this community. I learned so much from the team last year and had so much support from the families. Teaching is a tough job, so it is so important to have a strong community for support and Willow has supported me on all fronts.
