What is your favorite childhood book?

My favorite childhood book (series) was Anne of Green Gables.  As an imaginative, but quiet child myself, I loved reading about a girl who was daring, verbose, and sesquipedalian.  Anne showed me how to be brave, to take chances, and how not to diminish myself or my artistic predilections.  As I grew and changed, I revisited the series over and over.  Even in adulthood, I return to this book series when I need an infusion of joy.

What is your secret talent?

My secret talent is that I can produce a fairly good monkey howl – I like to “converse” with the monkeys when I visit the Denver Zoo.  In fact, I talk to a lot of animals.  In my undergrad days the other students in my department called me “Mother Goose.”  But that is a story for another time. 🙂

What is your favorite thing about teaching?

My favorite thing about teaching is seeing the light in a child’s eyes when they have a moment of discovery.  It happens during breakthroughs, investigations, passion projects, and in the culmination of effort that yields tangible results.  It is the payoff, the joy, and the spirit that keeps us all moving forward toward the next moment of brilliance.

What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

My favorite subject to teach is literacy, and I find information literacy particularly compelling.  Guiding and helping to develop my students’ abilities to find, read, evaluate, use, and convey information in all its various formats is invigorating.  They feel so powerful when they realize that they can find and share answers to all the things they are curious about!  It is thrilling to teach.
